The Family

One of my favourite quotes says: "Friends are God's way of apologizing to us for our families". Don't know what you might think of it but it's certainly a very clever quote.
The next few days in class we're going to talk about the family. If you need to check the vocabulary of the members of the family you can do it here. Move the cursor over the figures and you'll see the spelling and hear the pronunciation.
You are invited to read a little more about family structure and family life in Britain today.

  1. I agree with this reading about the nowdays family structure, I think that all is changing there is a lost of broken families sometimes because is necessary due to really importants facts that make the couple can´t be together. Another times they divorced for really silly things that they could mend being more tolerable. Behind all these divorces there is a lot of children that suffer this situation manifested in the school with low marks, in a rebeld behaviour...in other cases they accepted more or less.

  2. Thanks for posting your comments, Patricia. It is true that family structure is changing very quickly all over the world, and of course, also in Spain. Divorces, single-parent families, homosexual couples, cohabiting parents, etc, are concepts and family structures unknown in our country until very recently. And of course, children "suffer" or maybe we better say "have to cope" with these new situations, which in many cases they do not quite understand. Maybe this is the high price we are paying for living in a society like ours where we want everything and we want it now!

  3. Hello everybody:
About quote. I think is very interesting the sentence of Eric Butterworth: “It is not doing what you like that's important -it's liking what you do!” Philosopher Jagger said something similar. Mick Jagger said: “You can't always get what you want but, if you try sometimes you might find, you get what you need”. What do you say?

  4. Santiago, I love the expression ´you get what you need´ I wonder if we are not always getting what we need, only that we don´t realize. Whatever happens to us is our present, therefore we have no other choice, so why not accept it and try to learn from it thinking that ´that was exactly what we needed?´ A bit too complicated for this late at night... Good night.

  5. Luis wonder: "What is exactly we need? I think we need to feed us and to breathe to BE alive, and we need love to FEEL alive. Beatles said to us in their son "all you need is love", don't remember? Manytimes the simple things are the most difficult.

  6. What you say about love is very true. I think love is the fuel that keeps the engine of our lives running. When we move in the sea of love, things tend to be smooth and easy, when we separate from love our difficulties begin. But it is so hard to be a loving person all the time. A good friend of mine once said to me that it is a matter of ´frequency, duration and intensity´, that is, if we cannot be loving all the time, at least we must try to be loving more often, for longer periods of time and more intensely. That sounds good... and everyone can try!
